Great decision-making is the key trait of great leaders across time. Many leaders “go with their gut” on many decisions but others will make no decisions unless there were endless parade of meetings, deliberations, expert opinions and data overload. And yet, the quality of the deliberated decisions is not superior to quick “gut” decisions.

I have met many HR leaders requiring resumes, application forms and numerous interview sessions followed by long-deliberated meetings before hiring a candidate only to find that the person was not a good hire. Psychologist Samuel Gosling researched this phenomenon and found out that managers would make better hiring decisions by spending 30 minutes at the candidate’s house looking around vs spending countless hours interviewing the candidate. Seems rather odd that a 30 minute assessment without the candidate could be more accurate than judgments that have been laboured over for months?

According to well-known author Malcolm Gladwell – “Decisions made very quickly can be every bit as good as decisions made cautiously and deliberatively.”

How is this possible? Gut-feel is our subconscious mind weighing up all known factors and then making quick decisions. Gladwell calls it “thin slicing” And it “refers to the ability of our unconscious to find patterns in situations and behaviour based on very narrow slices of experience.”

The concept is demonstrated by psychologist John Gottman, who for decades analysed videotaped conversations of married couples and is able to predict with 95% accuracy whether the couples will stay together or get divorced in the next 15 years just by listening to a couple speak to each other for 15 minutes.

How does Gottman do it? He thin-slices these 15-minute conversations by disregarding expressions, tones and words but zooms in on four key cues: defensiveness, stonewalling, criticism, and contempt. By zoning out the noise and focusing on key cues, Gottman manages to make highly accurate snap judgments on marriages which are more accurate than any marriage counsellor spending months with couples can.

Many will feel that “thin-slicing” decisions are emotional and irrational. But it’s very rational. Gladwell concludes “it’s thinking – it’s just thinking that moves a little faster and operates a little more mysteriously than the kind of deliberate, conscious decision-making that we usually associate with ‘thinking’.”

Thin-slicing is something everyone does all the time. In football, the most gifted strikers have “goal-sense” and greats like Gary Linekar scored goals for fun. In the military, brilliant generals possessed coup d’oeil, meaning “the power of the glance.” Researchers discovered that the higher up the corporate ladder a business leader progresses, the more they rely on “gut-feel” and 80% of successful CEOs have a highly developed intuitive decision-making style, even though at times there is no clear logic to prove it.

The good news is that “thin-slicing” decision-making can be learnt and practised. You can actually become better at making quick, fast, instinctive judgments through practice and experience. Stroke victims, who have lost their speaking ability, become thin-slicing experts over time by reading information on people’s faces, regardless of their competency levels.

In business, the best sales people are expert thin-slicers. The moment they meet a customer, they quickly listen and make snap judgments about the customer’s needs and state of mind. But they also avoid the biggest mistake many salespeople make – never judge a customer on the basis of his or her appearance and assume that everyone has the exact same chance of buying from you.

Similarly to Gottman, the best salesperson disregards the garbage (appearances and externalities like what a person drives) but zooms in on key cues from customer enabling them to close a sale.

So how do you learn this skill? Jack Welch, Fortune’s “manager of the century”, and famous for gut decisions, describes how he learnt to “thin-slice”: “Sometimes making a decision is hard not because it is unpopular, but because it comes from your gut and defies a “technical” rationale. Much has been written about the mystery of gut, but it’s really just pattern recognition, isn’t it. You’ve seen something so many times you just know what’s going on this time. The facts may be incomplete or the data limited, but the situation feels very, very familiar to you.”

Jack Welch learnt thin-slicing through countless mistakes and experiences. Expert Paul Ekman claims that with just 30 minutes of practice, you will see significant improvement in your thin-slicing ability.

There is a principle stating, “Anything can be accomplished if a task is broken down into small enough steps.” So, expertise in thin-slicing is gained by identifying real cues that help us make good decisions and drowning out judgment bias derailers such as race, sex or appearance that get in the way of effective thin-slicing. A car salesman that judges a woman walking into his store as a non-customer simply because of his bias on women, will never amount to a great salesperson. He needs to strip those biases and focus on what the customer truly is saying and a sale will most likely happen.

Another way is to cultivate thin-slicing is by spending time with people not like us. This broadens horizons and provides new perspective in growing our experience-base. Having richer experiences and context sharpens our ability to thin-slice.

Finally, pay attention to your emotional state. When stressed-out or in a bad mood, your “gut-feel” is distorted by negative feelings. Police personnel tend to make significant number of bad decisions after high-speed car chases according to researcher Dave Grossman. Research has shown that bad “thin-slice” decisions are made when a person is highly stressed-up. And when your mind is relaxed, the “Aha” moments occur. But people are so stressed with overloaded schedules that they lose their own innate wisdom of intuition.

Thin-slicing can sometimes throw you off too – especially if you are over-confident and lack expertise in a changing field or function. For example, some of us have an inner prejudice or pre-condition that somehow taller people are very intelligent and forceful as leaders. As a result, many CEOs are taller people despite the fact that shorter people are just as smart and capable. According to research in the book Blink, 14.5% of the US male population is 6 ft or taller, yet 58% of CEOs of Fortune 500 companies is above 6 ft.

Professional speakers and trainers have long asserted that first impressions are formed within two minutes. Thin-slicing experts believe that it takes us less than 3 seconds to thin-slice and create first impressions. I have interviewed and hired more than 1,000 people at the various organisations these past 15 years. If I look back at my best hiring decisions, they were hires made quickly and instinctively. At times, I had no rationale for those decisions, but my gut kept telling me it was right. And when I didn’t listen to my gut, I generally had regrets.

Listening to your gut and making fast decisions is also profitable to your business and drives better business performances. Eisenhardt’s research (1989) linked rapid decision-making to effective business performance.

Would you be willing to listen to an employee saying “I have a gut feel about this project?” DuPont discovered that their product development time shortened from three years to less than three months by actively engaging employee intuition in their product planning.

The saying, “Trust your gut” is a cliché but it’s 100% true if you have learnt the art of thin-slicing well. We are genetically programmed with a lifetime of knowledge that equips us with the ability to make good decisions, quickly. Remember, information overload can negatively impact our ability to “thin-slice” effectively. So, go develop your gut and then trust it!

Selamat Pengantin Baru !

i got this from thefazz.com and off course he got this from his usual activities (i assumed) stumbling accross the net.. *wink*..

what "AHMAD FAIRUS" means?
disclaimer: guys this may not be right, but simply just for fun..

You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection.
You are confident, authoritative, and aggressive.
You have the classic "Type A" personality.

You are truly an original person. You have amazing ideas, and the power to carry them out.
Success comes rather easily for you... especially in business and academia.
Some people find you to be selfish and a bit overbearing. You're a strong person.

You are confident, self assured, and capable. You are not easily intimidated.
You master any and all skills easily. You don't have to work hard for what you want.
You make your life out to be exactly how you want it. And you'll knock down anyone who gets in your way!

You are balanced, orderly, and organized. You like your ducks in a row.
You are powerful and competent, especially in the workplace.
People can see you as stubborn and headstrong. You definitely have a dominant personality.

You are loving, compassionate, and ruled by your feelings.
You are able to be a foundation for other people... but you still know how to have fun.
Sometimes your emotions weigh you down, but you generally feel free from them.

You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It's easy to get you excited... which can be a good or bad thing.
You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don't stick with any one thing for very long.
You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start.

You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something.
You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense.
You definitely are a handful, and you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun.

You are a very lucky person. Things just always seem to go your way.
And because you're so lucky, you don't really have a lot of worries. You just hope for the best in life.
You're sometimes a little guilty of being greedy. Oh, that didnt mean i wasnt disspointed the next time i was cheated of something. no, it meant i was simply able to recover fast.

minal aidil wal faidzin

selamat hari raya, maaf zahir & It's a 114-minute chase film, dashing through streets and rooftops of any number of international urban sprawls with Matt Damon's redoubtable Jason Bourne hot on the trail of -- himself. That might be the genius of the series: A James Bond-like character who can escape any pickle and thwart any villain, but all in a quest for his own identity. Jason is not out to save the world -- though he might do that -- he'd just like to know his real name.

scenery

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; (what? picture speaks louder than word, don't agree with me? naa.. i wont be able to please everybody.. ) third, just go to template in my blog's control panel and select "customize design" to upgrade the current template. when it comes to developing a top-fight finance staff, one size does not fit all. (article is written by Paul B. Brown, from CFO.com )

"If life were fair, employees would be perfect. They would do exactly what we asked them to do—except, of course, for the fantastic ideas they would cook up on their own... .They would be cheerful-brave-reverent-thrifty; they would evolve smoothly from entry-level to VP with no bumps along the way."

So writes Erika Andersen in Growing Great Employees: Turning Ordinary People into Extraordinary Performers (Portfolio, $24.95). Anderson is quick to acknowledge that life isn’t fair and instead of being perfect, employees have the annoying habit of being human.

Still, as the cliché (unfortunately honored in the breach) goes: They are your most important asset. So how do you get the most out of them?

With all the books on the topic now coming to market, the one by Andersen, founder of Proteus International, a human resources consulting firm, is a good place to start.

First the bad news about the book. Andersen is so in love with the gardening metaphor—that’s where the title comes from—that your hair will hurt by the time you are done.

That said, she is particularly good at pointing out that your employees will develop far faster if you help them. That means tailoring your approach to how to get the best out of them—do they need you to spell out everything in detail, or can you just give them the big picture and let them figure out the best way to achieve the objective?

In other words, when it comes to developing employees, one size does not fit all.

Intriguingly, she argues, if you are sincere in "believing in people’s potential and wanting them to grow" they will do far better than if you consider "the people stuff" something that keeps you from doing your real job.

And in a statement that would make even the most hardened manager smile, Andersen stresses that employees have a responsibility to try to be all they can be. Specifically, she says, they need to be responsive to feedback; keep their word with their bosses; and always try to develop new skills.

If you are looking for help with specific techniques on developing people, pick up the updated edition of Co-Active Coaching ($39.95, Davis-Black Publishing.) The book, written by four business and life coaches—Laura Whitworth, Karen Kimsey-House, Henry Kimsey-House, and Philip Sandal—is intended for professional coaches. But the lessons can be made to work for finance managers as well.

For example, the authors write, "from day one, coaching focuses on what clients want," the client being the person paying the bills. If you substitute "you" for "client" the lessons will be equally valid. And you might want to skip over the part where they say that coaching is intended to address the client (read employee's) whole life.

The authors are particularly good, however, about presenting different ways to listen and probe in your interactions with the people whose performance you are trying to improve. And they provide sample dialogue you can use.

You do have to get past such new-age speak as: "witnessing means being authentically present with the client. When the coach witnesses the client’s learning and growth, the client feels seen and known at a very deep level." But the underlying messages and techniques are helpful and easily adapted to the workplace, even if the authors have given the book one of the most unappealing titles we have seen in a long-time.

While Andersen and the authors of Co-Active Coaching provide broad answers to the question of how to get the best out of your employees, Adrian Gostick and Chester Elton, who have published three previous books on the subject, take a much more narrow approach in The Carrot Principle (Free Press, $21.)

heir key finding after surveying more than 200,000 employees over a 10-year period: Companies and nonprofits that are effective at employee recognition are substantially more profitable and have people "who are willing to go further, stay later and take on more."

Now, you should take that conclusion with a grain of salt, given that the authors' day job is serving as senior executives at O.C. Tanner Company, "which specializes in helping companies motivate employees through comprehensive recognition solutions."

Still their conclusion makes sense, especially if you can tether the recognition to both the organization’s goals and an employees’ personal objectives.

As they put it, recognition "accelerates progress toward a goal by bringing new energy to its pursuit. While communicating a clear goal and purpose may be enough for employees to begin a task with enthusiasm, people must feel that they are making progress or their enthusiasm will begin to wane."

What kind of recognition do you offer? While a substantial amount of money is always good, Gostick and Elton say, anything under $1,000 really won’t register as meaningful for most people. And the authors' overall belief is that on-going recognition is better than one-time events.

Gostick and Elton offer 125 different ways of offering recognition. To their credit, many of their methods—such as sending an E-mail to the CEO or department head (copying the employee) describing how the worker went above and beyond the call of duty—don’t cost a dime.

But what happens if the person you are trying to manage is, by any objective measure, a jerk? What do you do then? Consultant Gini Graham Scott, author of A Survival Guide to Managing Employees from Hell (Amacom, $15), has some ideas.

To be sure, the case studies she uses frequently border on the cartoonish. For example, there is the bullying $200,000-a-year employee who rides a motorcycle to work and keeps pit bulls as pets or the assistant moved to the brink of tears by the slightest criticism. But the advice she offers is straight-forward and makes sense:

• Spend an inordinate amount of time interviewing before you hire someone. The best way to deal with a problem employeed is not hiring them in the first place.

•Meet with the employee at the first sign of trouble. Believing the problem may go away on its own is no way to deal with it. Invariably, it will get worse.

•"You'll find that being open and honest and straight-forward...is often the best policy. Doing so creates a good foundation of trust."

•Be painfully clear about what behavior you want to change.

•Keep "a detailed paper trail when an employee looks like trouble."

All this is good, and Scott makes one other point worth considering: "You may be thinking that you have problem employees, when the real problem is you. This may happen because you are repeating the same mistakes in hiring, or making difficult demands that no employee can truly satisfy.”

In other words, if the same problems occurring repeatedly, you may want to look in the mirror before you do anything else.

berbuka puasa cum farewell party

Although the program was short & simple, it takes a wholehearted team of people to make it happened. Not only did I have the good fortune to know them, I now get the great pleasure of thanking them for the support and off course the “belanja”.

It was berbuka puasa cum farewell party for me and jaja. With a tight dateline and busy works at office, i'm starting to loose my "taste of life". But it's always come back to the fundamental things that we want to achieve in life.

Lately, I keep questioning myself why life is so challenging that we can’t even discern what lies behind all the things happened to us? Perhaps after sometimes we will learn and realize that this is the path which has been destined for us. And for sure no other reasons except to make us a better person.

Now is the month of Ramadhan and is the ninth month in Islamic calendar. This holy month is full with blessing to Muslims who seek a raised level of closeness to God. As such, i’m taking this opportunity to ask forgiveness for what I’ve said and done that may hurt your feelings. May Allah bless us with forgiveness and great reward. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time. We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts, yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often.

We've learned how to make a living, but not a life. We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back,
but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space. We've done larger things, but not better things.

We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul. We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever, but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom. A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight, or to just hit delete...

Remember; spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon will grow up and leave your side.

Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

Remember, to say, "I love you" to your partner and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.

Give time to love, give time to speak! They confuce the word motivation with the word movement. They want people who do what they want when they want and how they want it done.

to me and as described in the book; "A motivated person may not necessarily do just that. He may rock the boat by suggesting innovative ideas for a company content to do things the way they have always been done. hence, the motivated employee may find his ideas squelched & along with his ideas, off course his motivation."

however, most of the time ppl feel that to go reverse of what the boss say is completely against the rule. so what?
